Preparing for your new Country Garden Turf lawn
You new turf will grow best when your soil is prepared in such a way as to ensure deep rapid rooting. Poor soil and poor soil preparation will cause your turf to decline. Mixing in pre turf fertiliser and watering the soil prior to laying the turf will ensure successful establishment. The incorporation of Country Gardens blended soils will improve poor soils and is excellent for levelling uneven surfaces.
How to prepare your soil for new turf
Dig over or rotovate to a minimum depth of 100mm until you have obtained a fine tilth, rake the level and remove any stones or debris and walk over the area “heeling in”. Do this two or three times until the area to be turfed is firm and level. Rake in the pre turf fertiliser and water the soil prior to the turf arriving until the ground is moist.
Laying your Country Garden turf
Your turf will come in neat consistent rolls and you will need a wheelbarrow, a sharp knife (preferably a Stanley knife to cut your turf) a rake and a hosepipe and if possible some scaffold boards or something similar).
Start laying along a straight edge butting the ends together until you have laid one. Complete the row then place the scaffold boards onto the turf so that you are not walking on the newly laid turf. Start your new row with a cut turf so that the joins are staggered like brickwork. Do not stretch the turf and always put the joint into place, if gaps do appear then fill them in with a soil mix. Ensure that all turf is gently pressed down onto the soil by using the boards or with the back of a rake to ensure the roots are in contact with the soil.
Aftercare of your new lawn
Immediately after laying start watering your new lawn, if you have a large area to lay do not wait until the end of the day but water as you proceed. Check under a piece of turf to ensure that the water has filtered through. Water for at least two weeks until the turf is established. Mow the lawn as soon as it grows long enough, with the mower on a high setting for the first two to three times then gradually decrease the height.
